Director, Insurance Risk (Charlotte, NC (Hybrid) or Remote)

How you’ll contribute:
As a Director of Insurance Risk, you’ll be responsible for addressing the increased recognition of the risks inherent in the products we produce and market, and the impact on the company’s earnings and capital position due to the changing product mix. This role will enhance the effectiveness of risk mitigation strategies to insurance risk exposure within the company’s risk appetite and ensure optimal capital position. The person in this role will be responsible for refining the strategy and enhancing risk framework for managing product risks, especially risks associated with the Variable Annuity and RILA product suites. The candidate for this role should be able to “connect the dots” among insurance, market and other inter-connected risks, interact and influence market, model and other risk areas. The incumbent will need deep experience, stature, and credibility in the organization to provide effective risk oversight and challenge consistent with industry best practices and regulatory expectations.

- Driving meaningful conversations with key stakeholders and providing effective risk oversight in all insurance risk related activities, including new product development, experience study and actuarial assumptions review and challenge, liability analytics and other inforce risk management
- Establishing the appropriate risk limits that align with the company’s Risk Appetite Statement
- Serving as a key advisor in risk strategy discussions and decisions, providing real-time evaluation of potential short-term and long-term insurance risks, and offering effective influence and challenge with business partners
- Providing leadership and guidance to junior team members and peers on best-practice development in insurance risk management, including risk models, product development and in-force management
- Effectively reporting and accurately presenting the insurance risk profile to all stakeholders, including senior leadership and regulators
We’re looking for people who have:
- 10+ years of financial risk management experience in the insurance industry with leadership skills developing, implementing and advancing risk framework.
- A deep understanding of linkages and impacts across the insurance risk, market risks and capital position
- In-depth technical (actuarial/mathematical/statistics) skills and life insurance product knowledge, knowledge of VM-21 and FHS a must
- Deep understanding of Variable Annuity products and RILA products, and the associated policyholder behavior assumptions that materially impact pricing and valuation
- Demonstrated ability to design and manage implementation of sustainable and repeatable processes that are adaptable and scalable
- Ability to effectively challenge first line of defense business owners on managing insurance risk that incorporate risk adjusted return metrics, including capital and market risks
- Proven track record as a subject matter expert, adept at leveraging technical skills to address business issues and fulfill financial objectives
- Ability to build stakeholder confidence internally and externally including regulators and rating agencies
- Strong written and exceptional verbal communication and presentation skills, with the ability to adapt style and approaches to different audiences
- Highly responsive and accountable, willing to actively contribute as a hands-on member of the team
- Advanced degree or Actuarial credentials required, preferred in Mathematics, Statistics, Actuarial Science or related field, Fellow of the Society of Actuaries and high actuarial credentials preferred

- Compensation – Base salary ranging from $150,000 - $185,000 plus competitive performance-based incentives determined by company and individual results.
