How This Role Contributes to Brighthouse Financial:

The Brighthouse Financial Lead Product Owner, reporting to the Head of Solution Design, is responsible for the technical design, implementation, oversight and future strategic roadmap of technical solutions related to the Enterprise Data platform.  The primary function of the role is to lead the design and implementation of the Azure based data platform by helping craft and prioritize the Epics and Feature stories.  This role will also oversee and direct the operations of the Business Intelligence and Reporting Analytics delivery function. An additional responsibility will be to oversee the Azure application landscape and how integration, data, infrastructure and security are implemented and managed for those solutions across the end-to-end IT architecture for the Enterprise Data Platform.  Ensures the technical strategy is materialized, working with technology and business partners to ensure solutions are defined, prioritized, designed, delivered and maintained with a simple and best-in-cost footprint.


Work Location:

To protect the health and safety of our employees, our offices are closed until at least May 2021. When our offices reopen, the individual hired for this role will be based in our Charlotte, NC office (preferred), our Morristown, NJ office, or may continue to work remotely with occasional travel required to NC or NJ (<10%).


Key Responsibilities:

  • Actively participate and drive the design sessions and produce the resulting Epics and User Stories required to support the implementation, documentation and the definition of success for the platform releases. The ideal candidate will have experience in customer-facing roles and success leading deep technical architecture and design discussions with senior customer executives, Enterprise Architects, IT Management and Developers to drive Enterprise Data Platform solutions to production and operationalization.
  • Work closely with the Data Science team to implement and activate the algorithms/models coming of the Data Science group, ensuring that they are operationalized and that the expected business value is realized.
  • Monitors ongoing development efforts for any significant deviations; prioritizes sprint backlogs and invokes contingency plans when appropriate. 
  • Troubleshoots and leads the resolution of data and delivery related issues. 
  • Ensures adherence to quality standards and reviews code / configuration and deliverables where required.
  • Ensures that staff and contractors develop and maintain technology components that are aligned with Brighthouse’s technology strategy and guiding principles. 
  • Leads technical solutioning to closure across teams, resolves technical challenges, understands and presents pros and cons when decisions are made - and is watchful of technical decisions that have long-term consequences related to data.
  • Maintains knowledge of technology roadmaps, vendor application roadmaps, industry trends and shares knowledge of risks, opportunities and services available to build a competitive advantage and improve efficiency and effectiveness of the business in specific relation to the capturing, transformation and quality of enterprise data.
  • Leads, manages, motivates and develops staff and contractors in a matrixed environment; identifying and addressing technical training and development needs.  Improves team performance by building team cohesiveness, leading, mentoring, training and motivating to facilitate cooperation, ensure efficiency and boost morale.


Essential Business Experience and Technical Skills:

  • Proven successful working experience of at least 3-5 years as a Product Owner for large complex enterprise data platforms.  Previous experience as an Azure Architect and/or Senior Azure Developer. Experience designing and implementing event driven (real time) architectures strongly preferred.
  • Extensive knowledge of the Azure ecosphere including applicable software, tools and technologies, databases and development languages including but not limited to Databricks, HDInsight, Kafka, Cosmos and PowerBI.
  • Expert level technical experience with ability to inspire the trust, confidence and respect of peers and other senior leaders.  Superior communications, negotiation and conflict resolutions skills; extensive experience with partnering with and managing vendors and consultants / contractors desired. 
  • Experience implementing Data Factory, Event Hub and Azure SQL Data Warehouse and Cosmos and working in the Agile methodology preferred.
  • Excellent analytical skills with the ability to collect, organize, analyze, and disseminate significant amounts of information with great attention to detail and accuracy. Technically adept at queries, reporting and presenting findings in consumable and easy to understand format.
  • Strong technical expert with demonstrated sound business judgment.  Analytic and strategic thinker / problem-solver capable of translating senior-level direction into structured, practical, efficient and effective recommendations / solutions.
  • Bachelor’s degree and related field experience preferred, MBA or other advanced degree and or relevant certifications highly desirable.
  • 10+ years of broad and deep experience in technology roles with progressive responsibility, preferably within the financial services industry.
  • Experience managing multiple onshore and offshore teams required.
