Manager, Tax & Audits (Charlotte, NC (Hybrid) or Remote)

How you’ll contribute:
As a Manager, Tax Advocacy & Audits you’ll be responsible for supporting tax audits, tax planning, and tax advocacy. This position will also support other tax functional areas (e.g., federal and state income tax compliance and accounting, tax information reporting, premium tax). This position reports to the Director, Tax Advocacy & Risk Management.
In this role, you’ll get to:
- Support the company’s tax controversy activities
- Serve as primary or secondary point of contact for federal and state tax authorities during tax examinations.
- Preparation or review of responses to notices and examinations by federal and state tax authorities including but not limited to liaising with other departments to gather and analyze data, understanding the company’s accounting methods and how they’re operationalized, and understanding how the accounting information gets reflected on the income tax returns
- Research and document tax technical return positions
- Support the company’s tax planning initiatives
- Model tax impacts related to forecasts, legislative changes, changes to return positions, and tax planning strategies.
- Gather information and perform computations to facilitate tax planning initiatives (e.g., E&P, FTC carryforwards, tax basis, etc.).
- Research and document tax technical and tax risk aspects of tax planning strategies.
- Support the company’s FIN48/Contingent Tax Liabilities process
- Actively participate in identification and evaluation of tax risks that may require a reserve.
- Maintain FIN48 reserves and interest calculations.
- Maintain any non-income tax reserves (contingent tax liabilities) and interest calculations.
- Support the company’s tax advocacy activities
- Serve as liaison to ACLI working groups, as appropriate.
- Monitor potential tax legislative changes and identify and communicate items of interest/impact to company.
- Support the company’s federal and state income tax accounting/reporting and compliance activities, as needed
- Actively participate in the tax quarterly financial close and reporting process, including review. and/or preparation of book-tax adjustments, current and deferred tax calculations, effective tax rate reconciliations, internal metrics, and tax footnotes.
- Review of federal income tax returns and related workpapers (e.g., book-tax adjustments, consolidating schedules, etc.).
- Preparation, as appropriate, of complex tax adjustments such as foreign tax credits.
- Review of standalone and consolidated/unitary/combined state income tax returns and related workpapers.
- Identification of process improvements to the tax compliance processes resulting from federal and state income tax notices and examinations.
- Support other tax functional areas as needed (e.g., premium and other non-income taxes, tax information withholding)
We’re looking for people who have:
- 4-6 years of federal and state income tax experience at a life insurance or financial services company or at a nationally recognized accounting firm, or a combination thereof.
- In depth knowledge and understanding of US GAAP and tax accounting (ASC 740) principles related to corporations.
- Experience with and understanding of insurance statutory and tax accounting (SSAP 101) preferred.
- Proficient with MS Excel, Access, Word, PowerPoint and Project.
- Strong data analysis and manipulation skills.
- Experience using CorpTax, investment accounting systems (PAM for Investments) and general ledger systems (SAP).
- Experience with Alteryx and other BI tools a plus.
- Prefer candidates who have or are pursing CPA.
- Strong communication skills, both oral and written.
- Strong accounting, analytical, and tax technical research skills.
