Tax Consultant (Charlotte, NC (Hybrid) or Remote)

How you’ll contribute: 
As a Tax Consultant you’ll be responsible for responsible for supporting all aspects of the tax function.  This tax professional will have primary responsibilities supporting investment tax and other income tax matters for tax compliance and tax accounting/reporting.  Additionally, the Tax Consultant will support other aspects of the tax function (e.g., premium tax, other indirect taxes) as needed.

 

In this role, you’ll get to:

  • Document and apply tax technical concepts to relevant investment areas such as fixed maturity and structured securities, equity securities, residential and commercial mortgages, real estate, joint ventures, leveraged leases and derivatives. 
  • Calculate and maintain accurate tax basis for all investment asset classes, such as derivatives, mortgages, securities, and partnerships.
  • Prepare required tax forms with respect to partnership investments owned by the Company including but not limited to Forms 926, 8621, and 8865.
  • Prepare federal and state income tax returns (separate, consolidated, unitary/combined) and related workpapers for life and nonlife entities, along with quarterly and year-end estimated and extension payment calculations and vouchers for income and franchise tax filings.
  • Prepare state franchise tax filings and other Secretary of State annual reports.
  • Prepare interim and annual US GAAP and Statutory income tax provisions and related disclosures in accordance with ASC 740 and SSAP 101, including book-tax differences, ETR analysis, current/deferred taxes, reserves, reconciliations, and financial statement footnotes.
  • Support SOX requirements for interim and annual reporting.
  • Support federal and state income tax audits (internal/external), including data gathering an analysis and drafting responses for information requests, as needed.
  • Support ad hoc projects and the indirect tax function, as needed.

 

We’re looking for people who have: 

  • Bachelor’s or master’s degree in accounting or finance. 
  • Certified Public Accountant (CPA) or eligibility/desire to become certified is a plus.
  • Minimum 1-3 years of income tax accounting and compliance experience. 
  • Experience in a tax practice of a major accounting firm would be preferred.
  • Synthesize large data sets to present in a clear, logical manner using MS Excel, Access, Alteryx, PowerBI, or other similar tools is highly desirable.
  • Strong communication skills, both oral and written.
  • Strong accounting and analytical skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple complex tasks towards completion at the same time.
  • Experience with life insurance Industry and tax accounting (ASC 740, SSAP 101). 
  • Experience with tax accounting and compliance for a wide range of investment types.
  • Working proficiency with tax software (e.g. Corptax).
  • Experience using investment accounting systems (PAM for Investments) and general ledger systems (SAP).
