How This Role Contributes to Brighthouse Financial:

The Portfolio Management Associate will be primarily responsible for helping to implement Brighthouse Financial’s asset allocation strategy and assist in daily portfolio management. The individual will work closely with the portfolio managers at BHF, our Treasury personnel and with our external asset managers in ensuring that cash is properly allocated and invested among asset sectors, mandates, legal entities and portfolios. The individual will also work on other aspects of portfolio management strategy, reporting, trade implementation, gain/(loss) management, value assessment and liability management across the Investments organization.


Work Location:

To protect the health and safety of our employees, our offices are closed until at least mid September 2021. When our offices reopen, the individual hired for this role will be based in our Morristown, NJ office.


Key Responsibilities:

  • Work with BHF’s Treasury, Asset-Liability Management and Investment teams to understand cash flows, liability portfolio ALM needs.
  • Create daily cash summaries and monthly/quarterly/annual cash projections.
  • Ensure compliance with portfolio-level, legal entity and enterprise guidelines and risk limits.  
  • Design and optimize portfolio implementation strategies and communicate BHF’s asset allocation strategy to external asset managers.
  • Monitor operational cash flows and manage investment cash flow to ensure availability of funds to meet required target portfolio allocation. 
  • Assist in the creation of tactical asset allocation strategies for the portfolios
  • Monitor trade implementation, gain/(loss) and other aspects of portfolio management.
  • Perform analyses/reports for portfolio managers and strategy team as needed.
  • Provide comprehensive view of current and future portfolio positioning.
  • Maintain relationships with BHF’s various external asset managers.


Essential Business Experience and Technical Skills:

  • Academic degree in Finance or Economics is required; MBA and/or CFA preferred
  • 5+ years of relevant experience
  • Fixed income portfolio management experience, preferably for an insurance company
  • Familiarity with strategic and tactical asset allocation strategies, within an asset-liability framework
  • Demonstrated attention to detail and the proven ability to meet stringent time constraints
  • Ability to work well with people at all levels of the organization
  • Strong written and oral communication skills
  • Strong teamwork-driven attitude – reasonable and flexible
  • Strong organizational skills
  • Quantitative skills,
  • Expert user of Microsoft Excel. Demonstrated ability to illustrate data visually using appropriate charts, graphs and tables. VBA experience a plus.
  • Knowledge of Bloomberg required; experience with Intex and BlackRock’s Aladdin system preferred
  • Some insurance background preferred
  • Knowledge of current events/trends impacting business issues (i.e. macro-economic, socio-political, industry, etc.)
