How This Role Contributes to Brighthouse Financial:

The responsibilities of this position include (1) providing advice and counsel on legal aspects relating to Brighthouse’s general account investment portfolio, including with respect to its derivatives portfolio; and (2) supervising and managing a team of attorneys supporting Brighthouse’s Investments Department.  The individual will serve as the key day to day point person in Investments Law for this work, while supervising other attorneys in connection with such matters.


Key Responsibilities:

  • Serve as senior most Investments counsel for all aspects of Brighthouse’s general account ($100B).
  • Supervise and manage team of attorneys supporting Brighthouse’s Investments Department.
  • Oversee, negotiate, and advise with respect to investment management relationships with 3rd party asset managers. 
  • Advise and support Brighthouse’s derivatives desk, including development of templates for trade confirmations and buildout of regulatory initial margin compliant documentation.
  • Advise on interpretation of various investment guidelines and derivatives limits, both internal and statutory.
  • Advise on investments-related issues in connection with insurance product development.
  • Comfortable playing a lead part in high visibility, senior position, and interacting with and advising Investment Committee of Brighthouse’s Board of Directors.
  • Advise portfolio managers on broad array of investment opportunities across all asset classes & structures.
  • Monitor and advise on regulatory developments impacting the Investments Department.
  • Oversee external counsel.
  • Interact with regulators as needed in connection with matters affecting general account investments.
  • Promote Brighthouse’s values and culture.

Essential Business Experience and Technical Skills:

  • Investments product expertise (from corporate bonds to private equity, structured finance, derivatives, private placements and bank loans)
  • Expertise in derivatives products, strategies, and documentation
  • Experience overseeing third party asset managers and relationships
  • Insurance investments expertise highly preferred
  • Familiarity with insurance investments regulations
  • Familiarity with identifying tax issues preferred
  • Good business acumen.
  • Influence and leadership skills, especially in the context of the ability to relate to different stakeholders, business partners and colleagues.
  • Self-starter with entrepreneurial mindset.
  • Able to work independently; exercises good judgment in determining when to consult management, colleagues, and clients.

  • 9+ years relevant experience at a major law firm and/or in-house legal department, reflecting a record of accomplishment.
  • Juris doctor degree from an accredited law school. 
  • Bar admission required.
  • Excellent academic credentials.
