How This Role Contributes to Brighthouse Financial:

The Lead Quantitative Analyst will play an important role in determining the hedging strategy of the firm and developing tools to support implementation of the strategy. The role calls for a mix of quantitative, business, and markets expertise, and will collaborate with a wide variety of groups across the company, including Senior Management, Pricing, Trading, Financial Planning, and IT.  The position reports to the Head Strategist for VA ALM and will have one or more direct reports under it. 


Work Location:

To protect the health and safety of our employees, our offices are closed until at least May 2021. When our offices reopen, the individual hired for this role will be based in our Morristown, NJ or Charlotte, NC office.


Key Responsibilities:

  • Play a primary role in devising strategies for controlling basis risk in VA hedging, including:
    • Designing and implementing improvements in methods for measuring index exposure of mutual fund NAV returns;
    • Collaborating on system enhancements for reporting and analyzing basis risk exposure; and
    • Collaborating with traders to implement trading strategies.
  • Contribute to development and implementation of tools that support design and analysis of the overall hedging strategy of the firm, ultimately supporting senior management decision processes;
  • Provide expertise across the firm on derivative valuation models and methodology, including explaining concepts to non-technical audiences;
  • Provide expertise across the firm on economic scenario generation, working with the groups that implement and use ESG for statutory and financial reporting and risk measurement.


Essential Business Experience and Technical Skills:

  • Advanced degree in a related technical field, such as financial engineering, statistics, mathematics, computer science, or equivalent technical experience;
  • 3 – 5 years practical experience that includes some combination of:
    • Developing or applying advanced financial models (derivatives valuation, risk management, etc.);
    • Structuring or trading derivatives;
    • Managing financial risk for insurance products with equity and fixed income underliers;
    • Collaborating with management and non-technical users.
  • Broad experience with quantitative programming tools and computer languages; Python is preferred but Matlab, C++, R, etc. are helpful.  Experience with Machine Learning tools such as TensorFlow or MXNet is a plus.
  • Specific areas of desirable technical expertise include:
    • Stochastic simulation of a variety of equity, interest rate, exchange rate, and volatility processes;
    • High performance, multi-threaded application development;
    • Deep neural nets and reinforcement learning;
    • Dynamic asset allocation strategies;
    • Portfolio analysis tools and methods used by asset managers.
  • General understanding of regulatory and legal considerations related to derivatives and insurance markets;
  • Good interpersonal and communication skills and capacity to function effectively in an environment consistent predominantly of cross-organizational teams;
  • Ability to self-manage among multiple competing projects and demands by maintaining a clear view of ultimate deliverable priorities set by senior management.
