How This Role Contributes to Brighthouse Financial:

The associate will provide paralegal support to the Investments Department in the Convent Station, NJ office of Brighthouse Financial.  The associate will be joining a team of professionals who are responsible for providing insurance-related legal support to Brighthouse Financial’s Investments Department, including support for its derivatives desk and legal services in connection with the oversight of third-party investment managers who manage Brighthouse Financial’s general account. In addition, the associate will provide paralegal level assistance to attorneys in the Insurance Products Law Group.




To protect the health and safety of our employees, our offices are closed until at least September 2021. When our offices reopen, the individual hired for this role will be based in our Morristown, NJ office but can also work from home most days. 


Key Responsibilities:

Maintain Investment Guidelines

  • Aggregate and process amendments to Brighthouse Financial’s existing Investment Guidelines, preparing cover letters and obtaining necessary sign-offs.
  • Coordinate annual review process for Brighthouse Financial’s legal entity and enterprise guidelines.

Assist with Regulatory Filings

  • Process and respond to investment-related regulatory filings, including in connection with Regulation U, CFTC and state-specific, as needed.

Insurance Law Research

  • Analyze statutes, regulations, judicial decisions, legal articles and other legal codes to help prepare legal documents.
  • Prepare legal summaries and recommendations.
  • Handle high profile special projects and regulatory requests by insurance regulators.

Investments-related litigation

  • Facilitate response to litigations relating to investments held by Brighthouse Financial, working with internal and external stakeholders to track, gather data and respond as appropriate.

Document Management and Retention

  • Update and organize Investments-related records and maintain SharePoint sites that serve as Brighthouse Financial’s document repository.
  • Assist with the development of document record retention plan.
  • Create summary/comparison charts for important legal documents.
  • Assist with preparing signature page packets and coordinating signatures.
  • Prepare cover letters, correspondence, and certain legal documents (e.g., NDAs).

Investment Subsidiary Governance

  • Maintain corporate governance over certain of Brighthouse Financial’s investment subsidiaries, including drafting and processing updates to organizational documents and various consents/resolutions.

Miscellaneous Support

  • Conduct legal research (review relevant statutes/regulations and prepare summaries).
  • Respond to requests for KYC/AML information relating to Brighthouse Financial’s investments.
  • Assist with one-off principal transactions, as needed.


Essential Business Experience and Technical Skills:

  • Bachelor’s Degree or Paralegal certificate preferred and 1-3 years experience, reflecting a record of accomplishment.
  • Strong capacity to manage own performance independently and effectively, exhibiting excellent time management, strong organization and detail orientation.
  • Proven sense of urgency, with the ability to identify and articulate issues, offer solutions, and follow-through to resolution.
  • Customer-centric orientation focused on anticipating and meeting internal client needs.
  • Willingness to build knowledge of Brighthouse Financial’s structure, operating model, objectives, policies, culture, and regulatory requirements.
